JE: Your marketing campaigns have always been good. And we only had 10 or 12 stores. Mom still worked at home. Because thats what people know. I mean you went to the community to sell that concept. We still have the meetings, but they get this questionnaire now on their in-store computer, the one that is for inventory and all that sort of thing and they answer these questions. We thought you know, since we dont have credit and we have to pay off the credit we have, that well earn our way out of it, we just had to shut down growth. rudimentary. CC: But if you couldnt see them you had a hell of a time. (Laughter) Youve just got to go in and fight it out, dig it out. He accidentally, you know, on purpose dropped a few hints about site selection. But it was not to be. CC: Lloyd was magic because everybody knew Lloyd, everybody respected Lloyd. But they dont vote, they count as one vote, all the employees in the ESOP (employee stock ownership plan) so it keeps us from being public for reporting purposes. Granddad wanted to go back in the little town in Canada. we did one commercial with him because Lamar couldnt hear anymore. The Cadieux family is behind some 700 QuikTrip gas station and convenience stores acroos 11 states in the Midwest and South. CC: No, we didnt think wed lose it all, we thought we couldnt expand. (Laughter) And I said, Yeah, thats wonderful. And we used them until they went through bankruptcy in the 80s like BOK went through it, and like everybody else went through it in the oil world. JE: And thats when he said, You can get in for $5,000. CC: Yeah, yeah and I talked to my Dad and. Having a net worth of $3 million, Chester Cadieux is a successful businessman. And he got a job opportunity in Arkansas City, Kansas, to run tank cars, because in those days we didnt have product pipelines and so they ran out in unit trains primarily. But we wired this dog to this spout where you put the gasoline in, but he couldnt handle that, and that was the only one we did, but we spent years trying to get a dog that looked like Lamar. So we were just stupid. And then is take home coffee to make at home but my wife and I go there for certain things. JE: So then, as we talked earlier, they were known as drive-in grocery stores, how did the concept of calling them convenience stores come about? I mean they were, Clank! He also joined the United States Air Force, where he spent four years. We got in the sandwich business, accidentally, but we got into it. And we finally got one that looked like Lamar but was bigger, and dumber. So if youre 77, its fairly depressing. JE: You were afraid. So he did that. Its better to be lucky than smart. Theyre believers. (Laughter) Was it about 1962 your gross sales went beyond a million dollars? He []. CC: Well that was the association that decided that they were convenience stores, which was intuitive and the right answer, that we are convenience stores. Weve always had better people. And the employees were the important part because they knew the customers. They want to find it. JE: Wasnt there a mentality that people might have had that convenience stores are Gotcha Stores. grandmother wanted to go to California, but (Laughter.) JE: But gas is gas is gas and so was it the additive packages that would make the difference for you do you believe? CC: And that saved the company and that was an accident. Well thats all from our marketing group. But thats so rare that you have that problem. Its a whole different kind of fuel. Cause those guys eat a lot, drink a lot and so forth. If somebodys grandmother dies, youll find that theres three people working here that are related to that grandmother, and we love that. CC: Yeah it was the attention that the customer got and the cleanliness of the store. Yeah, I mean Chet wears shorts. And some of them were good, and some of them were terrible. When some of these things came out about the quality of gasoline, gasoline is gasoline. And he was just a kid, but he was a smart kid. Especially in some of these big new markets where you can get your name on something but you cant afford TV or whatever, its a way to kind of get your name out.
